    Research focus:
    My research program is focused primarily on grassland biogeochemistry, with special emphasis on the areas of nutrient management, nutrient cycling, water quality, and ecosystem services associated with cultivated and native grassland ecosystems.

    Current research projects are focused on:

    1. Evaluating the relationships among land management, agricultural production, and delivery of ecosystem services (including soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation) in a changing climate.
    2. Identifying potential synergies and trade-offs associated with grassland intensification
    3. Developing nutrient management strategies to achieve production and conservation goals.
  • Extension

    My extension program is complementary to my research efforts and addresses the agronomic and environmental challenges associated with nutrient management in forage-based beef cattle production in Florida. During the past 16 years, I have provided a leading role in developing, evaluating, and promoting soil nutrient management strategies that result in adequate forage production while protecting soil and water resources. My extension program major goals are to:

    • Develop and implement environmentally-sound fertilization management for pastures in Florida
    • Provide technical expertise and scientific basis for the development and implementation of state environmental regulations
    • Improve forage production and environmental protection by facilitating producer adoption of sustainable soil nutrient management programs and best management practices
    • Promote and disseminate science-based information about the critical ecological services associated with native and cultivated pastures in Florida
