About the Experiential Learning Lab
The Experiential Learning Lab in the Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences provides hands-on learning experiences in sustainability for students through undergraduate research opportunities, field and lab activities and demonstration areas, and a composting and gardening area that serves as a teaching demonstration while offering students and the community a place to compost their food waste and enrich the garden soil.

Location
We are located in the UF Energy Research and Education Park on SW 23rd Terr. See map below.
We have parking spots and a bike rack available.
Bus routes 9, 35 and 37 stop at the front of the Park. Link to Bus Route Map
The Energy Park will be on the right side of the road immediately after University Commons Apartments. Once you turn into the park, take the right fork and continue around to the back of the park. The Experiential Learning Lab will be at the end of the road. See map below.

Awards
In 2016 Dr. Ann Wilkie received a Champions for Change Award from the UF Office of Sustainability. The annual Champions for Change Awards recognize "individuals and groups in the UF community who have made significant contributions in the areas of sustainability".

In 2018, the Student Compost Cooperative received a Champions for Change Award for their educational activities and impact on sustainability.


Dr. Wilkie received a 2025 Champions for Change Award from the UF Office of Sustainability for transforming waste reduction practices through her innovative outreach program. Starting with one composter in 2009, the program now includes multiple composters, rainwater harvesters, and a regenerative garden, engaging hundreds of visitors annually.

Katya Kasprzak was recognized as one of the Top 10 Seniors in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in Spring 2025. Katya is earning a degree in environmental management. She competed at the Southeast Regional Collegiate Soils Judging Team and has assisted with research at the Experiential Learning Lab. After graduation, Katya wants to pursue a career as a soil scientist.
