Florida Wetlands Extension Program

Riparian

Florida's Riparian wetlands exist where soil and soil moisture are influenced by nearby streams or rivers. These wetlands are unique because they run parallel to rivers and process large fluxes of energy and minerals from upstream systems. Their position near rivers makes them highly susceptible to flooding.

Southeastern Riparian systems are the most extensive in the United States. These wetlands are low-lying, flat, extensive floodplains, highly affected by seasonal hydrological patterns.

Riparian wildlife: Abundant animals include beavers, river otters, deer, squirrels, mice, frogs, cottonmouth snakes, copperhead snakes, and rattlesnakes.
