Gulf County:
Apalachicola River
(ap - ah - lach - eh - col - ah)
Size: 35,487 acres
Location: The Apalachicola River Water Management
Area runs some 19 miles along the Apalachicola River in Gulf and Liberty
counties. The water management area lies east of Wewahitchka and west
of the Apalachicola National Forest.
Purpose of Acquisition: The 35,487 acres of river
floodplain that make up the Apalachicola River Water Management Area
were purchased to preserve and protect the water quality of the Apalachicola
River and its ecosystems. The Apalachicola River contains the largest
forested floodplain in Florida, with more reptile and amphibian species
than any other area north of Mexico.
Recreational opportunities: Seasonal hunting, bank
fishing, canoeing, hiking, primitive camping, and bird-watching are
all available on the tract. Florida River Island, located at the northeastern
end of the water management area in Liberty County is very accessible
for hunting and fishing. It is also a great area for bird-watching.
Ninety-nine different species of breeding birds are known to live in
or visit the Apalachicola area. Swallow-tail and Mississippi kites,
as well as many different kind of hawks, put on great aerial displays
here, especially during the spring. Picnicking and primitive camping
areas are also available at this site.

isolated upland "islands"

tupelo honey), May haw (source of May haw jelly), spider lily
